THE GREAT MANUFACTURING TOWN

In questo brano, tratto da The old curiosity shop, scritto nel 1840 da Charles Dickens, i protagonisti giungono in una città industriale inglese ed entrando vengono pervasi da una buia tristezza, da una lugubre ombra (shadow), che, man mano che avanzavano, si trasforma in una densa e scura nube di fumo. I sobborghi delle città erano costituiti da lunghi allineamenti di case di mattoni rossi, alcune con piccoli giardini, dove la polvere di carbone e il fumo delle fabbriche oscuravano l'aria e rinsecchivano le foglie delle piante; c'erano vaste zone senza un filo d'erba e ai lati delle strade c'erano delle pozze d'acqua stagnante. Da ogni parte, fino a dove poteva arrivare la vista, si vedevano altissime ciminiere ammassate l'una all'altra, che riversavano fuori il loro fumo tossico.

"On every side and as far as the eye could see into the heavy distance, tall chimneys, crowding on each other, and presenting that endless repetition of the same dull, ugly form, which is the horror of oppressive dreams, poured out their plague of smoke, obscured the light, and made foul the melancholy air."

Tutt'intorno c'erano delle costruzioni fetide nelle quali strane macchine si muovevano continuamente contorcendosi come creature torturate.

"On mounds of ashes by the wayside, sheltered only by a few rough boards, or rotten penthouse roofs, strange engines spun and writhed like tortured creatures; clanking their iron chains, shrieking in their rapid whirl from time to time as though intorment unendurable, and making the ground tremble with their agonies."

Qua e là apparivano case pericolanti tenute in piedi da altre che gli erano cadute vicino, senza tetto, senza finestre, ma nonostante questo abitate.

"Dismantled houses here and there appeared, tottering to the earth, propped up by fragments of others that had fallen down, unroofed, windowless, blackened, desolate, but yet inhabitated."

Gli uomini, le donne e i bambini, pallidi e malvestiti, si prendevano cura più delle macchine che della loro vita e chiedevano la carita per le strade oppure si affacciavano mezzi nudi alle porte delle case con la cattiveria dipinta sul volto.

"Men, women, children, wan in their looks and ragged in attire, tended the engines, fed their tributary fire, begged upon the road, or scowled half-naked from the doorless houses."
