City Slums
This extract shows John Barton, a skilled weaver, and his friend Wilson visiting a poor family, the Davenports, in Manchester's slums.In these terribly overcrowded slums, piped water and toilets were rare, and people shared communal water supplies at an outside pump.Follows the description of outlook from the Davenports' cellar, where women tossed household slops into the running water, where heaps of 'ashes' (a nce evasion for excrement) were obstacles to pedestrians and damp filth oozed into the cellars.

The passage contains the description of the brilliant display in a shop and the detailed accont of the house of a mill owned - Mr Carson - where a bored family lives in lazy luxury. It's breakfast time and the servants seem very busy with preparations. The cook grilled steaks, and the kitchen-maid toasted bread, and boiled eggs. In the luxury library, at the breakfast table, sat the two Mr Carson, father and son, both reading.
